Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha is the capital of Luang Namtha province in Northern Laos, located right on the Nam Tha river. This is the largest city in the north of Laos and is also a popular stop for those who like to explore and experience new things.

Luang Namtha is home to more than 30 different ethnic groups such as: Khamu, Akha, Hmong, Lanten,... This place is still a hidden gem that attracts many nature-loving guests who are looking for unique things to do. Challenging activities like hiking, kayaking, cycling, exploring pristine jungle or learning about hill tribes. Nowadays, accessing this area has become much easier due to constantly improving facilities.

Luang Namtha Museum

Luang Nam Tha Museum is a prominent attraction that you can visit when traveling to Luang Namtha, Laos. This place is currently displaying many items from ancient times or from recent wars. The museum includes ancient textiles, traditional clothes of ethnic minorities, ceramics, musical instruments, Buddha statues, and stories about the history of Laos.

Golden stupa

The Golden Stupa is also known by another name, Luang Namtha Stupa or Samakkhixay Stupa. This is considered the most prominent landmark in Luang Namtha. This project was officially completed in 2008 and is located on the foundation of two previously destroyed temples. The Golden Stupa is not only a simple structure but also represents the friendship between the King of Laos and a Thai King.

The golden stupa is located on a hilltop. While standing there, visitors can admire the breathtaking mountain ranges or watch the beautiful sunset.

Visit ethnic villages

Luang Namtha is home to many different ethnic groups. So a visit to those villages is a great way to explore the unique culture and living customs. This is also an opportunity for tourists to interact with local people in the closest way possible.

You can visit Nam Dee village, which is home to the Lanten and Lao Huay ethnic groups. This village is only about 5km from Luang Nantha and is famous for bamboo paper making and indigo dyeing. In addition, you can go to Mat Mai-Akha village to chat with the people and try on unique costumes. One thing to note is that the road leading to the village has many very bumpy sections.

Explore cuisine at the Night Market

Unlike the night markets in Luang Prabang and Vientiane, the night market in Luang Namtha is more like a hawker center rather than focusing mainly on cuisine. Although it is not a diverse shopping destination, this is also a place where you can enjoy local specialties such as spring rolls, noodles, soup, papaya salad, mango sticky rice,... In addition, the market has more strange specialties such as offal, beef, fried crickets, balut, grilled bats,...
